History of the Red Fort
Delhi, India

The Red Fort was first built by the Rajput Tomar king Raja Anangpal, before its expansion in 1639 A.D. by Emperor Shah Jahan. It was initially the residence of the royal family and in recent times has become one of Old Delhi's most popular destinations for tourists. On 15 August every year, (the anniversary of the date of India's independence from the British Empire) the Prime Minister of India addresses the nation from the Red Fort. This shows the importance that this impressive building still holds in the modern era.

The ornamental design of both the interior and exterior of the Red Fort is derived from Persian, European and Indian elements. Consequently, the Shahjahani style that the building displays is incredibly rich and beautiful. Today, the building shines as a mark of architectural elegance and is a breath-taking sight to behold.
